  • Your explanation can be a written or video summary (max. 500 words or 60 sec. video) that details why you chose the author/theme, the medium and what the link is to what you have created.

  • Bonus points for explaining why you would love an author to visit your school.

  • All schools will receive a certificate for participating.

  • Schools within a three hour travel radius of Westfield Heritage Village in Rockton, Ontario, will win a live author visit; schools further away will win a Skype visit.

  • Author visits will take place during the 2017-2018 school year.

  • A Telling Tales committee will narrow down the top entries.

  • An expert panel of independent judges will make the final decision, and select the three winners.

A few ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

  • Create your own illustration to celebrate Canada’s 150th, like illustrator Derek Douglas.

  • Write a creative story about your class going on an adventure by just using your imagination, like the characters in Ted Staunton’s Harry and Clare’s Amazing Staycation.

  • Become a storyteller like Itah Sadu, and share a video of your own cultural traditions.

  • Explore what it means to be a family like The Lotterys Plus One by Emma Donoghue.

  • Venture into space like the characters in Kevin Sylvester’s MINRS series.

The Telling Tales Festival is an amazing day when kids big and small get to hang out with authors, illustrators and musicians, meet historical and literary characters, and have a blast. It happens every September at Westfield Heritage Village in Rockton, Ontario, and guess what? It’s FREE.

Winners will be announced at the festival on Sunday, September 17, 2017
