Celebrating Stories at McQuesten Neighbourhood’s Heritage Harvest

Listen to stories, participate in activities, plus meet an author and illustrator! During the McQuesten Neighbourhood’s Heritage Harvest Canada 150 Celebration on June 24, 2017 enjoy literary readings and activities from a Telling Tales presenter.

Melanie Florence

Presentation at 2:30 p.m.

Melanie Florence is a writer of Cree and Scottish heritage. She was close to her grandfather as a child, a relationship that sparked her interest in writing about Aboriginal themes and characters. Join Melanie as she talks about the importance of storytelling, traditional storytelling, and be one of the first to hear her read from her upcoming picture book Stolen Words. Melanie will be officially launching this new book at the Telling Tales Festival on September 17!



Derek Douglas

Presentation at 3:30 p.m.

Derek is an illustrator from Dundas and created the beautiful illustration for this year’s Telling Tales. He also illustrated Canada: Our Road to Democracy and Canada: Our Home and Native Land. Join him for Pixels vs. Paint: a fun and interactive demonstration of children’s art. Derek needs YOUR help to demonstrate the differences between creating art with pixels and with paint. This demonstration is sure to be super-fun and interactive.


McQuesten Canada 150 Celebration: Heritage Harvest

In addition to these special stories, participate in family friendly activities, tours of the McQuesten Urban Farm, a BBQ, live music, an interactive community art project, camp fire and fun community partner-led activities throughout the day.
